Is AuthorsDrop free?
You get 30 days to try it. After that, it's a one-time $89 USD payment (or local equivalent) if you want to keep using your account.
Is this a monthly subscription?
No. Pay once after the trial if you decide to stay.
Who is AuthorsDrop for?
Anyone working on a long piece of writing: novels, scripts, non-fiction, dissertations, theses, research papers. If your project has chapters or scenes that won't stay in one Word doc, it's probably a fit.
Can I write a novel in AuthorsDrop?
Yes. Chapters, scenes, character notes, and research can all live in one project.
Can I write non-fiction in AuthorsDrop?
Yes. Books, essays, guides, anything with sections you need to move around.
Can I write stage plays and screenplays?
Yes. There are script formats with scene headings, dialogue, action lines, and the usual screenplay/stage-play line types.
Can I use AuthorsDrop for academic writing?
Yes. People use it for dissertations and theses: draft chapters, stash research notes, keep sections in order. It's not a reference manager (use Zotero or similar for citations if your school requires that).
Can I use AuthorsDrop for a master's dissertation?
Yes. Same idea as a thesis: chapters, notes, and drafts in one binder.
Can I use AuthorsDrop for a doctoral thesis or dissertation?
Yes. Long projects are what the binder layout is for. Split work across chapters and keep research notes attached to the project.
Does AuthorsDrop manage references?
Not formally. You can keep research notes and sources in the project, but for citation styles and bibliographies you'll probably still want a dedicated reference tool.
Does AuthorsDrop work on Apple devices?
Yes. There's a Mac app in the App Store, an iPhone/iPad app in TestFlight/App Store rollout, and the full editor at https://www.authorsdrop.com in any browser. Product tour: https://www.tryauthorsdrop.com.
Does the app work on non-Apple devices?
The website works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari on Windows, Linux, and Android.
Do I need to install the app?
No. The website is the full app. Install Mac or iOS only if you want a native shell.
Will the website and app work differently?
Same account, same projects, same editor features. Pick whichever device you're on.
Do I need technical knowledge to use AuthorsDrop?
No. If you've used a binder-style writing app before, most of it will feel familiar.
Can students use AuthorsDrop?
Yes. Several students use it for dissertations and long essays.
Can I use AuthorsDrop for more than one project?
Yes. Your dashboard lists every book or script you create.
What happens after the free period?
You get 30 days free. After that, editing locks until you pay the one-time fee or redeem a friend code. Your files stay saved; nothing gets deleted. AuthorsDrop Press (prose export) is included in the trial and with lifetime access.
What is AuthorsDrop Press?
Press formats prose manuscripts with themes, trim sizes, and live preview, then exports EPUB or print-ready PDF. It works on https://www.authorsdrop.com and in the Mac app during your trial and after you unlock lifetime access. Overview: https://www.tryauthorsdrop.com/press/.
Where are my books stored?
On your computer or in a personal folder you choose (such as Dropbox) — not on AuthorsDrop servers. Open Save location on the dashboard to set this up.
How do I set up saving (folder or Dropbox)?
Open Save location. Either pick a Local PC Folder (optional: Mirror saves to Dropbox), or Connect Dropbox → Allow → Save now. Look for binder.json and .bwrt files in your folder or Dropbox/AuthorsDrop. The editor shows Saved and Synced when it is working. No Dropbox developer app needed.
How do I keep my writing safe if I get a new computer?
Use Save location to choose a folder or Dropbox. On the new computer, sign in and reconnect that same place — your books should appear. If you only saved in the browser on the old computer, those books may not come with you, so set a folder or Dropbox before you switch machines.
Can I import from Word, Scrivener, or Final Draft?
Yes. In the app (https://www.authorsdrop.com), open My Books and click Import, or go to Save location → Import from another app. Supported: Word (.docx), Final Draft (.fdx), and a zipped Scrivener .scriv project (include the Files/Docs folder). How do I prepare a Scrivener project for import?
Zip the whole .scriv package — the binder plus Files/Docs — then choose that .zip in Import. A .scrivx binder file alone usually has no scene text. If the import looks empty, re-zip the full package and try again.
